Unsaturated zone

The term 'Unsaturated zone' as it applies to the area of water can be defined as 'the zone immediately below the land surface where the pores contain both water and air, but are not totally saturated with water. These zones differ from an aquifer, where the pores are saturated with water'.

The term 'Unsaturated zone' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' The subsurface zone, usually starting at the land surface and ending at the water table, that includes both water and air in spaces between rocks. See zone of aeration'.
